More adventures in Colorado
There is so much to do in and around Colorado Springs and one of them is The Cave of the Winds. Tucked in the mountains is a cave that so interesting to see, but much to my dismay the photographs that I took with my phone, while under ground, did not come out so good. However the geological formations were very interesting. While on the surface one item that we got good photographs of was the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings. These dwellings are ancient Puebloan ruins that were transported here from southwest corner of Colorado near Mesa Verde to their current site to preserve and protect them from looters. I could not imagine moving a rock formation like this to another place and then build it into existing rock wall and blend it in so flawlessly.
At the same location there are two very interesting museums that explores the life of the Pueblo Indians that resided in the dwellings. Since we are encouraged to stay socially distanced I made a quick trip through the two but one thing that really caught my eye was a very large rattle snake that was on display over a doorway.
While in the area we learned of a place called Bishop’s Castle in Rye, Colorado. This is described as a storied offbeat stone castle being hand built by a local resident. Of course we had to go see it and what a surprise once we got there! It was so unexpected. As you enter the job site you are welcomed by a few warning signs that let you know that the owner is unusual.
Once you got past the signs the building that awaited was pretty unusual to say the least. It was both beautiful to see and a little bit scary to explore. I think the photos will show that better than I can describe it.
This is one of those places that will never make the Fodors Travel Guide but it was well worth the trip to go see it. Hopefully the internet connection will keep working here so I can make more updates. Until then Edgar, Judy and I are having a blast!
Beautiful… So happy you are enjoying your travels. Did Judy climb the stairs?
