We are finally headed east!

Yes we are leaving Colorado and heading east but we are not in any hurry to get back to Delaware. Once we got into Kansas it didn’t take long to find a place to visit. In Burlington, KS we found the Kit Carson County Carousel located on the Kit Carson County Fairgrounds. This hand carved carousel was the sixth of 2500 made by The Philadelphia Toboggan Company and today only 150 have survived.

This explains a lot about the ride

There are three rows of animals on this ride with the ones closest to the center being smaller that the outside one. Since the animals do not move up and down the carousel can go faster. According to our tour guide this particular ride could achieve speeds close to twelve miles per hour and trust me this one moved! While it was at top speed it was very difficult to stay on. In addition to the actual carousel there is a very interesting museum located near by. The price for admission is $1.00 for the museum and $0.25 to ride the carousel.

I remember them to be bigger!
The detail was unbelievable

Once the ride was finished the tour guide asked if anybody would be interested in seeing the inner workings of the carousel and you bet my hand went up faster that anyone else. Although the ride has been totally restored it still uses the original mechanical and electrical components.

Over 100 years old and still runs!
And when the ride is over this still stops it!

Well enough about going around in circles our next stop will be in Oakley, KS and one can only imagine what awaits!
